BENEFITS
Suranjaan Sweet is used as a carminative, laxative, and an aphrodisiac. Colchicines are effective in the treatment of gout, rheumatism, and diseases of liver and spleen. Externally, the corms are applied as paste to lessen inflammation and pain.
Suranjaan Sweet is Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, anti-gout (relieves inflammation and pain of acute gout but does not increase expulsion of uric acid, is used with an alkaline diuretic), emetic, cathartic. Anti-chemotactic, antiphlogistic, inhibitor of mitosis. Highly toxic. Used for external application to lessen inflammation and pain.
Plants in this genus contain toxic amounts of the alkaloid colchicines which is used pharmaceutically to treat gout and Familial Mediterranean fever. The use of the roots and seeds in traditional medicine is thought to have arisen due to the presence of this drug.
